George Metcalf is an accomplished senior-level retail executive who presently is an adviser for private equity funds with their investee companies. He started with Staples Inc. in 1989 and was on the initial start-up team that opened the first 5 retail stores on the West Coast. He led and helped grow the company from 24 stores to 1286 stores, and became the Vice President, Sale and Operations for the West Coast.
George was the Vice President of Stores at Toys“R”Us from 2002-2008. He was responsible for all store operations for Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us, including the integrated store strategy, sales, merchandising and operations. As the Vice President of the $2B Pacific Division, he managed teams lead by 3 Regional Directors, 10 District Managers and 250 indirect reports representing approximately 9000 employees. His team delivered record double-digit comps the first year and positive sales comps and financial performance yearly.
He started with private equity fund Brentwood Capital Associates in 2008 and was the GM-Executive Vice President of Spectrum Athletic Clubs. His team grew membership sales by 25%, and improved EBITDA performance by over 14%, which positioned the company for a successful M&A transaction.
George was the Executive Vice president for iViu Technologies from 2010-2014. iViu was the first indoor location aware mobile software company that worked with retailers and venues to improve their financial performance, data and customer experience.
Until 2017 George was Vice President for BevMo! owned by Private Equity Fund, Tower Brook Capital Partners. Leading the turnaround and growth for stores in California and Arizona, he was accountable for all sales, operations, P&L, loss prevention and human resources. He led the opening for the new prototype stores with a reduced footprint of up to 40% while increasing revenue, profitability and reducing capital and costs by over 30%.
